Buying in Bulk

Have you ever needed a whole bunch of thread or some other sewing necessity but been appalled at how much such a quantity would cost? I had plans to make several pencil pouch/makeup bags, but I really didn't like the thought of buying 20 or 30 zippers for $1-$2 each. After doing a little searching, I discovered something! You can buy zippers on eBay for really cheap! Thirty zippers for just $4.89 and free shipping! Too good to be true, right? But this is not a scam, because I ordered, and I got my zippers! Yay! Of course, the store I bought from only has 9" zippers, but there are plenty of other options from other stores.

Some more looking has shown me that the same store that had the zippers sells bobbins for very cheap as well. Thread is harder to find. Serger thread is everywhere, but I couldn't find any shop that sold regular sewing thread in bulk like the zippers. I did, however, see a listing for 30 spools of black thread that was about half the price of what I can buy at Walmart. I guess you just have to be on the lookout and wait until what you want comes along.

There is also an abundance of fabric, lace, ribbons, and other sewing accessories on eBay. Just be sure to compare prices with local stores before you buy! I use local stores a lot, but I'm going to have to keep searching for deals on eBay as well!

Time to Breathe

Now that all the holiday concerts and parties are over, I have finally been able to get back into somewhat of a daily routine. This, of course, means more time for sewing. So, what have I been doing (instead of posting on my blog)? Well, for one, I finally fixed this cute checkered shirt:

I've had this shirt so long I don't even remember when I bought it. It was too big, but I loved the pattern and style so much I couldn't pass it up! The bottom piece was gathered at the waist, creating a bunched, poofy look. Not exactly flattering. So I took the shirt apart, made the bottom section smaller, and sewed it back on. I just love the outcome!! I have worn this shirt so much lately I hardly know how I survived without it!

Another thing I have been working on in the past few days is sewing makeup bags/pencil pouches. I had cut out a bunch of rectangles several months ago to make into pouches, but then I never got around to it. There's never a better time than now!

They are actually really quick and easy to make. Between yesterday and today, I have sewn 11. They are now all for sale on my Etsy shop.

We'll see how long this productivity continues! I have a lot more projects in the works!

Drawers and Drawers...

This Christmas, I told people not to get me fabric. Or yarn. I have way too much of both! I have bags and bags of yarn under my bed. I have drawers and drawers and boxes and bins and shelves of fabric. A few weeks ago when I was sorting through all this fabric, I kept asking myself, "How in the world did I get so much stuff???" I know I am a seamstress, but...

Anyway, I still did ask for some sewing-related things for Christmas, like scissors, a tape measure, and a seam ripper. I am so happy with my new sewing accessories!!

I even got a set of beautiful pins from my dear friend Emily. When we were working on our 1950's dresses at my house, she couldn't help but notice my poor supply of pins. (I am embarrassed to admit that I had less than twenty and most of them were bent.) Happily, my problem is now solved!

I just love these pins so much! I could seriously have spent a lot more time than I did taking pictures of them. They are just so beautiful!

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but one of my goals for this year is to get caught up on sewing projects. Ha! I am drawers and drawers and boxes and bins and shelves away from that goal. I suppose I'll just take this elephant one bite at a time and see what happens.
